Mental health problems abound in most societies of the 21st Century. Perhaps the only ones who don’t have these confronting issues are the indigenous groups who do not participate in the western model of ‘civilisation’.

mental health problems

The common mental health issues range from anxiety, PTSD, phobias and depression to schizophrenia, bipolar, suicidal and more. They can be seriously debilitating disorders which prevent the person from functioning normally, or not at all. The impact on the immediate family is no less drastic.

The normal route for people with mental health problems to take, or perhaps the route their relatives take them on, is the medical one. This inevitably leads them to psychiatrists and the use of heavy drugs or worse.

This route only attempts to treat the effect of the problem. It has no ability to treat the cause of the problem. The often unpleasant effects of the medication inevitably leads to issues with taking it. Frequently, the medical treatment of problems is worse than the original problem.

What else can help these issues?

First, it is necessary to understand that the normal way of society is dysfunctional for many people, especially the sensitive ones. We are generally out of touch with Nature, with our inner core/spirit, we eat badly, we never have time to smell the roses, we cover up problems rather than deal with them, we seek quick fixes rather than look at why we have the problem, and so on.

Permaculture gardeners and farmers talk about sustainable gardening. In other words, gardens and farms that require little effort to work once set up, that will never deteriorate. I would like to extend this idea to sustainable living.

  • For me, sustainable living means connecting with Nature regularly, appreciating the perfection and beauty of it.
  • It means connecting with our inner wisdom/core/spirit/whatever you like to call it, so that we are in harmony with our purpose and what is important to us. This is where yoga, tai chi, meditation and other such practices come in. You need to quiet the mind to reach inside.
  • It means living within a like minded community who support us and allow our differences without judgement, as well as respecting our personal space.
  • It means being able to contemplate, or think creatively, so that problems can be easily resolved.
  • It means growing our own food where possible, or buying local food.
  • It means respecting other species, other life forms, our very planet, in a way that can only enhance them.
  • It means seeking help, where necessary, from those who also follow these paths and who seek the cause before resorting to a treatment.

If the world stopped on its race track, to who knows where, and followed these principles, there would be no more mental health problems and probably no more health problems of any kind.

Our desperate racing stems from unhappiness, isolation, loneliness and perhaps most of all, our disconnection from our inner selves. For some this leads them to go-go-go. For others it’s to constantly buy the latest fashionable item. For others, it leads to mental health issues.

It may not be possible to immediately start to live sustainably for most people although I suggest the goal should be there. So what can you do for an existing problem?

Homeopathy provides a completely natural, safe, and above all highly effective, way of cutting through to the core of a problem and set about healing it. It is probably the only system of health care that can truly heal these deep seated issues.

However, you will rarely find a homeopath specialising in any area, such as mental health, as we work on the whole of you, not just a part.
