ADD and ADHD have become common conditions that doctors and psychiatrists make today. Even school teachers make unprofessional recommendations for the use of the medications so commonly used in these conditions, largely because of their inability to manage the child.

ADD and ADHD are not just childhood conditions. Adults can also be labeled with these conditions.

I believe that some parents (and doctors) can jump to the conclusion of attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder a bit too readily and easily.

The label of ADHD is often given to naturally hyperactive children that parents can’t control. Children should be active, they should challenge their parents. It may be the parents at fault for not giving the child enough of the right sort of activity to satisfy their energy.

The label of ADD can be overzealously given to shy or introverted children, who find it too challenging to express themselves.

Schools are particularly boring places for children to be. I think if your child is not labeled with something, there may be something seriously wrong with them! The common education system of today really is no place to bring satisfaction to a growing, inquisitive child.

A shy or intimidated child can often become much worse in a school situation.

Progressive education, that teaches a child to think (rather than what to think) include homeschooling, the Steiner schools, Montesorri and others.

However, there are indeed children who really are off the normal range at each end of the scale. But to my mind, there are factors which contribute to this. And there are far better solutions to the problem than to drug the children, which come with huge, sometimes unseen, side effects.

First let’s look at some of the likely causes.

Diet is one of the most important casualties in today’s society. Growing children have high demands for quality, nutritious food. Yet most go short. A diet high in fast food, with it’s high content of animal protein, processed food, salt, fat and sugar all spell disaster for anyone’s health, and in particular children’s health. There is no nutrition.

Perhaps because of its daily consumption, this may be the most important. Change that (probably not without a riot) and the problem may significantly improve, if not disappear.

The second most important causative factor, in my opinion, is the medications children routinely receive. Vaccines damage the immune system. Repeated vaccinations create neurological damage and autoimmune diseases. Antibiotics given to babies and infants stifle the growth of their developing immune system. Add steroids to that unhealthy cocktail, and how can you expect a child to be ‘normal’?

So what else can you do?

Childhood illnesses are a normal and healthy way for a child’s immunity to develop. In the old days, chicken pox parties were a way to help this process, when common sense prevailed more than it does today. So allowing ailments to occur, without interference unless absolutely necessary, may be inconvenient to you as a working parent, but is far more supportive of a healthy child.

Sometimes it is advisable to provide some health care measures, but the natural and holistic health care modalities, such as homeopathy, offer you and your child far better support than medications, with their suppressive qualities, ever can.

Good homeopathic treatment has the ability to bring harmony back to any troubled soul, whatever the cause, whatever the current distress, including children labeled as ADD and ADHD.
