About a year ago, a women came to see me for severe menstrual pain. She had been advised to have a hysterectomy, on the basis that she was experiencing pain and profuse bleeding.
Her homeopathic treatment cleared the pain and the profuse bleeding up completely in just three months. During that time, the homeopathic medicine I chose for her dissolved the pain as soon as it started to niggle.
She was very pleased with the result, but hadn’t fully grasped how homeopathic treatment works. This is common. How can you teach someone a whole new way of life in just a couple of consultations, when the focus is on the problem in hand?
So when she started to experience what seemed to be a urinary tract infection, she went back to her GP. Antibiotics were prescribed, which seemingly cleared up the infection. But then guess what happened?
Her menstrual pain and profuse bleeding returned. So then she went back to the medicine I had given her. Her pain went, as before. But then she experienced the discomfort of the infection again. Again she went back to her GP. Again she was given antibiotics. Again her period pain and bleeding returned.
Finally, she returned to see me. Then I explained what had been going on.
All professional homeopaths try to go in as deep as we can, to get a profound healing action. This is not always possible, but this is our aim.
Once this healing action has started, it brings back old symptoms, in a mild way, as a sign of a cleansing action. Old symptoms generally come back in the reverse order of appearance. It’s like holding a mirror up to your health history. Re-appearance of old symptoms is normally mild and often go unnoticed. It’s a good sign of returning health.
By going backwards, by repeating old suppressive measures, the healing response of your body stalls, preventing further progress. So you remain locked in an endlessly repeating cycle.
Had she remained with her remedy, she would have quickly moved through the echoes of the past urinary tract infections, increasing her well being and immune system along the way.
It’s always a good idea to keep in touch with your practitioner as you may not understand what’s happening to you. A quick phone call could have saved her many months of suffering.
Another common problem people encounter is their dose. Everyone is an individual, so everyone’s dose will be different. It is impossible to gauge how often someone needs a repeat dose accurately. This is one of the reasons for a follow up consultation – to refine details such as your personal dosage and how you can work it out for yourself.
A man rang me to say he was experiencing problems with his remedy and wanted to try other remedies instead. He didn’t want to come back for the follow up consultation, preferring to self medicate.
I couldn’t tell exactly what was happening, because he wouldn’t give me the time to explore the issue, but it sounded as if he was overdosing on the remedy.
This is not uncommon. People are fixed in the idea that they need to keep taking the remedy. This idea comes from current medical ideas. With homeopathy, the remedy is taken only to stir up a healing response in the body. Then it is stopped. To be taken only when this response has fallen back.
Homeopathic treatment is not like any other treatment. You need to understand some very basic concepts before you try to treat yourself successfully. In effect, you need to turn your current thinking on its head. This takes time. Most people don’t relinquish old thoughts readily.
