The best ways to treat insomnia are the natural, gentle and healthy ones. The ones which consider the cause of the insomnia and aim to repair that, rather than put you into a drugged state, are the ones which have a lasting effect.

Acute insomnia have obvious causes such as a noisy household or neighbours. Chronic insomnia can be caused by a variety of different factors. Some of these are not obvious, or at least not so obvious as noisy neighbours. But once you know the cause, you can take steps to heal the problem.

Many people stay up too late, working, watching a late night movie or socialising. They sacrifice what they consider to be a waste of time, to more productive activities. However regular periods of sleep are necessary to remain healthy. By substituting your natural sleep time with any waking activity, you are starting down a slippery slope to ill health.

It is only in deep sleep that you dream. Dreaming is an essential part of unloading the stresses of the day.

If you have got into a habit of ignoring your body’s signals to sleep, you can become too tired. Maybe you are too alert to sleep. You haven’t managed to wind down enough to slip into sleep. Then lying in bed becomes frustrating. This can set up a pattern, resulting in chronic insomnia.

Different people need different amounts of sleep. Some do well on as little on four hours, while others can’t manage on less than ten hours. What is important to focus on is that you have energy during the day, which drops off without your optimum amount of sleep.

Other, no less significant, causes of insomnia include:

  • wi-fi – because the signals are never switched off
  • shift work – because your body clock is not followed
  • anxiety and stress
  • pain and discomfort
  • any ailment with invasive symptoms such as coughing, heartburn, allergies, etc
  • lack of regular exercise

The effective ways to treat insomnia is to try to work out when it started. Then try to trace back what was happening in your life at the time. This can be easy if it coincided with, stay the installation of wi-fi. Go back to ethernet cables!

Or if you stopped exercising regularly. Start up again if you can.

It is less easy when you work in shifts, when you suffer with anxiety or when a chronic ailment keeps you awake. Or when you simply can’t work out the cause. This is where good homeopathic treatment is so effective. Working out the best treatment for you as an individual will not only eliminate the insomnia, it will also deal with the other problems you have.

This is known as constitutional prescribing – ie it deals with deep, core issues rather than simply alleviating the acute problem.

The best ways to treat insomnia is to treat the cause. You may be able to achieve this yourself if you are very aware of your symptoms, if the problem is not ingrained and if you have more than a good grasp of some of the common homeopathic remedies. However, for most people, the quickest way is to see a professional homeopath.
